The Shoot
We started the day by arriving at Emma's house at 9:15, we decided on this time because it is quite early and therefore we would have a full day to film. We started by loading the equipment (dolly, crane, lighting, boom mic, tripods, cameras, small camera lights, shoulder rig/Steadicam, clapperboard, green screen, props, dead cat, batteries and spare sensors, lenses and filters) into my dad's van. This made it easier for us to transport all the equipment and the people. We then set off for the first location - my mum's apartment, where we would film the first scene. Upon arrival, I noticed that I had forgotten my keys for the apartment, so me and my dad drove back to his house to pick them up. This took about 30 minutes out of our day. Once we got into the apartment, we formatted the SD cards for the cameras, and took down any personal items from my room. We set out the props across the room (bottles of alcohol, hoodies, the photoframe) and spread clothes across the floor, the make the room look messy and like Kym has been staying in there for a long while. We also recorded the voice over with the boom as our actor Sam had nothing else to do in this scene. Whilst I was doing the make up, Tom recorded me so we had evidence of this on our behind the scenes film. We configured the small room to fit all of us, cameras and the boom, and then we filmed the scene. This all together took about 2 hours. During this time, we also recorded Sam's voiceover as he was not involved in this scene. The apartment was also in a quiet surrounding so we knew we would get good quality sound. We then moved on to our next location, Healey Dell in Rochdale. Here we would be filming the suicide scene. First, we filmed with the crane from the path below the bridge, which would be used for an establishing shot of the location. We then carried the equipment up to the bridge and set up. I was working on filming the behind the scenes footage and filming Joe receiving a telephone call. This scene did not take too long as there were very few retakes. We also filmed the scenery off the viaduct ready for the green screen. We tried to work with different angle to see who was calling on Joe's phone, however due to the natural lighting outside, we found this very difficult and decided to keep it anonymous, which actually worked at this then had connotations of Joe turning away from the whole world and everyone in his life as he was about to jump. One problem that slowed down filming was the general public walking past, as we had to pause or a few seconds every time they did, however this was a minor problem. Once we were happy with the footage, we then walked down the path from Healey Dell to a very small wall to film Joe jumping off it onto a green screen as this was one of the two possible locations we were going to use for the jump. We opted for the second location. We then drove the Cloughbridge Reservoir in LoveClough to film Kym and Joe as a couple. In this scene, we used a dolly. This allowed us to track Joe and Kym walking and create a variety of shots. Here, we also used a wall that looked similar to the bridge in Healey Dell. Two of us climbed across the wall and help up the screen screen, and then we filmed Joe jumping off it. This took 3 takes. We also used a very low wall overlooking the reservoir as this looked quite picturesque and beautiful and would be suitable for the happy, romantic scene. We shot at a variety of angles and there wasn't much structure as there was very little acting required, we just want to get some naturalistic shots of the actors seeming "couply". We also changed roles, as Lucy filmed some parts and so did I. This went very well overall.
